The Voice of the Wall – Urban Memory Photographs
Walls in the city are mirrors of society; sometimes a silent cry, sometimes a hopeful shout. The words and sentences written on concrete buildings and roadside walls function as a collective diary of urban life. People project their inner monologues, emotions, desires, rebellions, dreams, and hopes onto these walls. The texts on walls and facades—echoes of the city’s pulse, breath, and voice—carry the soul of the city. Letters, symbols, words, and drawings in different colors and forms reflect traces of collective memory.
By photographing the words on the walls and facades between neighborhoods, I wanted to make visible the unspoken emotions, problems, and thoughts of individuals. These writings, reflecting the heart of society, reveal the shared feelings, fragility, and outcries of the city’s inhabitants. Even when these words are painted over in dark colors, their silent resonance continues to exist within the city. Independent walls across Eskişehir form a sequence of inner monologues that come together as a narrative. The hidden voices of these walls became a way for me to articulate what I could not say, to express what was left inside. This project, which seeks to understand the emotional bond between the individual and the city, also aspires to become the voice of walls in other cities.This photographic work is dedicated as a gift to all those who have shared their stories and emotions on the walls of Eskişehir.
This project is still ongoing, and as it will eventually be published as a book, only a small selection of photographs is shared here to give an idea of its concept.
Duvarın Sesi Kent Belleği Fotoğrafları
Kentlerde duvarlar, toplumun bir aynası; bazen sessiz bir çığlık bazen ise umut dolu bir haykırıştır. Kentin içinde sıkışıp kalmış beton binaların ve yol kenarında uzanan duvarların üzerindeki kelimeler ve cümleler kolektif toplumsal bir günce niteliğindedir. İnsanlar, içsel monologlarını, duygularını, arzularını, isyanlarını, hayallerini ve umutlarını kentin duvarlarında dışa vurmaktadır. Toplumun nabzı, sesi ve soluğu olan duvarlardaki ya da bina cephesindeki metinler, kentin ruhunu taşımaktadır. Farklı renklerle ve biçimlerde yazılmış harfler, semboller, kelimeler, çizimler toplumsal belleğin izlerini yansıtmaktadır.
Mahalleler arasında duvarlarda ve bina cephelerinde söylemeye cesaret edilemeyen duyguları, sorunları, düşünceleri fotoğraflayarak bireylerin iç dünyasını daha görünür kılmak istedim. Duvarlardaki toplumun kalbini yansıtan cümleler, kelimeler kentte yaşayanların ortak duygularını, kırılganlıklarını ve haykırışlarını yansıtmakta. Ancak bu duygular zaman zaman koyu renkli boyalarla silinse de kentte yankılanan bu sessiz ses, varlığını sürdürmektedir. Eskişehir’in birbirinden bağımsız duvarlarındaki içsel monologlar bir hikaye oluşturacak şekilde sıralanmıştır. Duvarların saklı anlatıcılarının sessiz sesi, benim de anlatamadıklarımı, içimde kalanları ifade etmem için bir araç oldu. Kentle birey arasındaki duygusal bağı anlamaya çalışan projemin başka kentlerin duvarlarının da sesi olmayı amaçlamaktadır. Bu fotoğraf projesi, Eskişehir’in duvarlarında hikayelerini ve duygularını paylaşan tüm insanlara bir teşekkür olarak armağan edilmiştir.
Bu proje hâlen devam ettiği ve sürecin sonunda bir kitap olarak yayınlanacağı için, fikir vermesi amacıyla yalnızca az sayıda fotoğraf paylaşılmıştır.
